I had picked up a package of Isabel’s gluten free batter mix at the Glasgow Allergy and Free From show back in January, and ended up bringing it with me when I moved home to the United States. My mom scored a near-new Fry Daddy at an estate sale over the weekend, so naturally we were excited to try it out. We broke out my gluten free batter mix and decided to make onion rings, along with a few fried mushrooms and zucchinis.
You guys, this batter is perfect. It coats the vegetables nicely and fries into a light, crispy batter that tastes great. And for me, the best part is that not only is the batter gluten free, it’s also dairy, soy, corn and nut free. All you add is water! If you are in the United Kingdom, go get it right now – Isabel’s is pretty widely available at UK grocers and online. If you are in the United States, it’s a little harder, but we can get it too. It’s available on Amazon (*Isabel’s gluten free batter). But, I found that you can get the same 8-pack directly from Isabel’s, shipped to the US for about $40 (as of 11/16/2016). So yes, that’s about $5 per packet, but we battered a whole onion’s worth of rings, five decent-sized mushrooms and about 10 slices of zucchini. The packet says you can do about four pieces of fish with it if you’re after fish and chips instead. The expiration date on my packet was January 2019 (bought in January 2016), so they’ve got a solid shelf life.
Can I just say that when I was a kid, the platter of fried vegetables was one of my favorite appetizers ever? I love a good battered mushroom dipped in ranch, and you NEVER see this gluten free out in the world. It was so great to have this again!
